What is the Nintex workflow in SharePoint? ›

The Nintex workflow designer is native to SharePoint, with deep integrations and pre-defined actions that allow you to build powerful automated workflows. Create sophisticated processes, leverage digital forms, generate documents, create approval tasks, and more — all within a familiar SharePoint environment.

Developed by Australian entrepreneurs, Brian Cook and Brett Campbell, Nintex is a workflow automation solution. Primarily used for SharePoint and Office 365, Nintex helps companies in 90 different countries automate processes on and between leading enterprise content management systems.

SharePoint workflows are pre-programmed mini-applications that streamline and automate a wide variety of business processes. Workflows can range from collecting signatures, feedback, or approvals for a plan or document, to tracking the current status of a routine procedure.

The biggest feature difference we found was the ability to copy and paste a workflow step is missing from SharePoint Designer and available in Nintex. Additionally, Nintex has a wider variety of workflow tasks to choose from and an easier to easier to use designer.

Power Automate has a large library of connectors for various third-party services, while Nintex provides integration options through APIs and pre-built connectors. For seamless integration, you might also consider services that specialize in connecting different apps and automating workflows.

Microsoft removed SharePoint Server 2010 workflow services from existing tenants on November 1, 2020. We recommend that you move your classic SharePoint Server workflows to Power Automate flows.

SharePoint 2013 workflow will be turned off for new tenants as of April 2, 2024. It will be removed from existing tenants and will be fully retired as of April 2, 2026. This applies to all environments including Government Clouds and Department of Defense.

SharePoint Designer workflows also only work within a single site. Microsoft Flow can go between sites, site collections and even different tenants and farms. Microsoft Flow is much more extendable in terms of business automation.

First, you'll need to export your Nintex flows into Power Automate. You can do this by going to the Nintex Gallery and selecting the “Export” option. Next, you'll need to create a new Power Automate account and connect it to your Nintex account. Finally, you'll need to import your Nintex flows into Power Automate.

Which forms are better Nintex or Power Apps? ›

Both Nintex and Microsoft PowerApps have great features that many organisations would benefit from. Although, when comparing both systems, PowerApps is much more affordable, whilst also giving users the option to create their own applications, with less IT support than Nintex would require.

Site Workflows. ​A site workflow is attached to the site rather than a list or library. The creation and management of site workflows is the same as for workflows that are attached to a list or library. Note: Actions specific to lists and libraries are not availalbe for site workflows in the Nintex Workflow Designer.

Nintex is easier to learn than PowerApps. Powerautomate has better performance and flexibility than Nintex Workflow. We selected Nintex for its mature capability and "no-code" functionality. Nintex Process Platform makes it easier to develop no-code solutions than both PowerApps and ServiceNow.
