Rich Simple Syrup (2024)

Simple syrups are an efficient way to sweeten your co*cktails without altering the flavour too much. A traditional simple syrup would consist of one part sugar and one part water (i.e. 1 cup of each). A rich simple syrup has double the amount of sugar, meaning 2 parts sugar and 1 part water (i.e. 2 cups of sugar and 1 cup of water). The amount of syrups made can be reduced or increased, as long as you keep to a 2:1 sugar to water ratio. What makes rich simple syrup useful is that you could use less in volume compared to a regular simple syrup, but still achieve the same amount of sweetness. This is also a great syrup to add extra texture to your co*cktails, creating a thicker mouthfeel since it is also more viscous than traditional simple syrup. The standard is to use white granulated sugar for simple syrup for a more neutral sweetener, but you may also use other forms of sugar such as palm and demerara to add more depth of flavour.

INGREDIENTS

• Water (½ cup)
• Sugar (1 cup)

DIRECTIONS

• Using a saucepan, add water and bring heat up to medium-high.
• Heat up the water to a boil.
• Add the sugar.
• Stir until the sugar has dissolved.
• Remove from heat.
• Let the liquid chill at room temperature.
• Bottle, seal and refrigerate.
• Keep refrigerated. Keeps for 14 days.
