Amid Backlash Over Tarkov Game, Gray Zone Warfare Gains Momentum (2024)
After a turbulent week for the Escape From Tarkov community, when Battlestate Games decided to release a new DLC and charge additional fees to players who already owned the $150 Edge of Darkness (EoD) Edition (the one that was supposed to include all future DLCs), a new game has emerged in the arena.
Madfinger Games, an indie studio known for its mobile projects, released a first-person shooter, Gray Zone Warfare, on Steam into early access on April 30, 2024. The game is set in the Democratic Republic of Lamang, a fictional country in Southeast Asia inspired by Laos, where players take on the roles of private military company fighters. Their mission is to explore the region and uncover the reasons behind the island's quarantine.
Gameplay in Gray Zone Warfare offers an alternative to titles like Escape From Tarkov, requiring players to undertake missions, complete objectives, hunt for loot, and aim for successful evacuations. The developers have prioritized realism, especially in simulating ballistics.
Shortly after its online release, Gray Zone Warfare garnered over 66,000 players on Steam. As of the latest count, the game has received over 9,000 reviews, with 60% of them being positive. However, player feedback highlights significant performance issues, causing stuttering even on modern PCs.
However, when there are enemies to fight Gray Zone Warfare feels really good. It's not a smooth and polished experience with a few things that need to be fixed up to make combat feel perfect, but as a base point, it's already great.
Solo play is pretty much rewarded in Tarkov and you can lone wolf your way through should you choose. Gray Zone Warrior is an out-and-out squad-based game and you better stick to your roles or face getting taken apart.
These gray zone actions include election meddling, economic coercion, and the ambiguous use of unconventional force. Below the level of war, gray zone conflicts pose a challenge to U.S. efforts to pursue its interests.
If you like tactical shooters where a single shot can put you down, yes. If you prefer COD style action then no. Game is EA so expect the odd crash and issue. You will lose kit but you can replace it fairly easily.
When you die in Gray Zone Warzone, your current gear is left where you died. You can recover it, although it does despawn after a certain amount of time.
Judging from my limited playtime with Gray Zone, it's an early access extraction PvEvP shooter where, over repeated sessions, you gradually stockpile better loot back at basecamp like a squirrel stashing more elaborate nuts in an ever-expanding crevice.
