TOP-10 Best Ultrasonic Cleaners in 2022 from $14 to $122 (2024)

What is the best ultrasonic cleaner? There are two types of these devices: an industrial machine and a portable ultrasonic cleaner. Industrial-grade units are very effective, heavy-duty, and equipped with a high-wattage generator. As a reference, the generator is the most important part of an ultrasonic cleaner because it provides power to the machine. They also feature robust tanks made from welded stainless steel. Portable ultrasonic cleaners are smaller in size, compact, and easily transportable. However, they come with less powerful generators and are used to clean only small items like toys, jewelry, and food.

It is important that the device is large enough to hold the item you want to clean. Basically, the frequency of about 45 kHz is enough, however, some items may require as much as 130 kHz.

The development of ultrasonic machines and cleaning dates back 70 years when a laboratory at the Radio Corporation of America discovered the cleaning action of ultrasonic energy. The technicians were using freon to cool radio components when they observed a wave action around a crystal operating at 300 kHz. The concept was not actively applied as a cleaning mechanism at the time until the 1950s when ultrasonic cleaning machines were developed. The pioneers began by designing machines with a frequency of 18-40 kHz, and later in the 1980s, commercial systems were invented that operated at 25-40 kHz. Modern technologies have spawned the invention of systems with higher frequencies (up to 45 kHz) that are portable and designed for both domestic and industrial use. Here, you’ll find five different models of the best ultrasonic cleanersfrom $17 up to $130.

How it Works

Ultrasonic cleaners use a process known as cavitation to clean items. This process occurs when ultrasonic energy leads to the rapid formation and collapse of cavitation bubbles. The electrical energy is converted to ultrasonic energy through the transducer, leading to the creation of high-frequency sound waves. The bubbles induced by high-frequency sound waves stir through a liquid, causing dirt, oil, rust, pigments, dust, and other contaminants adhering to items made of glass, ceramics, rubber, metals, and plastics to come out. The idea is to alleviate all the traces of contamination embedded on the jewelry or other items. Regular cleaning solutions like dishwasher soap can be added to the ultra-sonic cleaner, but some users prefer adding ammonia or a degreaser. The efficiency of the transducer determines the amount of time spent cleaning the items and how fast the surface gets clean. Poor quality transducers increase the cleaning cycle and the power consumed.

How Ultrasonic Cleaners Differ

  • The Size.Check the capacity of the tank; it should match your cleaning needs. Ultrasonic cleaners with tanks that have a capacity of 600-750 ml are ideal for basic cleaning purposes. Industrial cleaning may require larger tanks.
  • The Frequency.Ultrasonic cleaners are designed with the right frequency and power for various operations. As such, when buying the device, consult a qualified ultrasonic dealer to help you choose the right machine for your application. Most cleaning applications require a frequency of 40-45 kHz, but special cleaning requirements like of delicate jewelry items need a higher frequency (68-130 kHz).
  • Cleaning Solutions. Most ultrasonic applications are water-based, but users can add solvents or cleaning agents for a faster cleaning process. Ask the manufacturer about the best cleaning solution to use in the machine to avoid destroying the inner wall.
  • The Cleaning Process. The ultrasonic cleaning machine has a set dwell time and temperature, usually indicated in the manufacturer's manual. Be sure to follow this guide. Also, look at the cycle time; if you can turn on the heater during the cleaning process, look for a machine with low cycle times. However, if you are looking for a machine that requires minimal supervision, choose the one that has longer cycle times (15-30 minutes).

Timothy Leighton is the Professor of Ultrasonics and Underwater Acoustics at the University of Southampton. He has invented a number of devices intended to be used in healthcare and is the author of over 400 scientific publications.

What we did come up with is a device that uses a small spray of a smooth stream of water and within that water, it makes sound generated in the white ball. We have microscopic bubbles that fall down this spray of water. This works with just cold water straight from the tap, without soap and additives. One thing you might notice is they these bubbles do not wash away very quickly, they stick to the surface. They actively seek out crevices and hard-to-clean places because the sound echoes around those cracks and crevices like the sound that goes around the cathedral. So it drags the bubbles in.

Testing & Customers Reviews

We found reviews from real YouTube bloggers about the products from our article.

The Redneck Preppy:"I personally believe when it comes to ultrasonic cleaning that you need to temper your expectations. I think it's a pretty good way of cleaning your brass or firearms parts, but if you're expecting some amazingly shiny brass that looks like it just came out of the factory you should probably consider a dry vibratory or, better yet, wet rotary tumbler method.

Ultrasonic cleaning will clean your brass for the most part. In my experience, I found that after cleaning brass for two sessions of 30 minutes each it would come out pretty clean, particularly the primer pockets. It would also feel clean. You know that feeling you get when you degrease something. That said, if you gave the brass a pretty good rub with your fingers you'd find some residual carbon on them afterwards. If that's clean enough for you you'll be pleased. If you want perfect cleaning and shiny brass you'll probably be dissatisfied. It is important to note the more brass you put in there the less effective the cleaning would be. Ultrasonic cleaning works better if there's space between the items being cleaned.

I found the results when it came to cleaning firearms parts to be fairly similar depending on how carbon coated those parts were. I did find that there was still some residue sometimes left on the gun parts. But given that I was going to wipe them down to ensure they were dry before giving them that loving oil treatment probably not the biggest issue in the world. You do need to remember that this is a consumer grade electronic ultrasonic cleaner. If you want to go down the ultrasonic route for cleaning brass and gun parts and this isn't acceptable I would consider maybe buying a medical grade ultrasonic machine that you can find online.

At its most important function - cleaning I find that RCBS ultrasonic case cleaner generally does an acceptable job. It removes most of the carbon and dirt from brass and it does a reasonable job on gun parts even those that have a fair amount of carbon. The capacity is fine. The basket is large enough to hold a good amount of brass and certainly large enough to hold most gun parts from a rifle or handgun. You can actually use it for more than just brass and gun parts. You can use it for things like jewelry, tools, eyeglasses, frames. So there is always that added functionality, I guess. It's easy to empty and clean.

Now, as for cons. Well, there are a few. If you expect medical-grade cleanliness out of your brass or gun parts, you're going to be disappointed. It does take a long while for that water to get to maximum heat from a cold start. The plastic basket is not the best. Granted I used my cleaner many times over the past years so it did take a beating, but it does seem a little flimsier than it should be. Do I actually recommend the RCBS ultrasonic case cleaner? Yes. With some provisos. If all you want is just generally clean brass, you're probably going to be pretty happy with this unit. If you want that blindingly bright brass I would probably consider vibratory or rotary tumbling. The fact that you can clean gun parts is a nice part of ultrasonic cleaners and this unit is large enough to accommodate a good amount of brass or parts for cleaning. Finally, the price point is reasonable. So, yes, I would recommend this."

Johnny's Reloading Bench: "I bought this VEVOR Ultrasonic Cleaner at the end of last year. There are several brands being sold on Amazon that I think are probably identical. Like the button configuration looks exactly the same and the case looks pretty close. This is the 3 liter model they offer a couple sizes that are smaller and then a bunch of sizes that are bigger. Now when I say this one is a three-liter, it'll actually hold about 2.8 liters if you fill it all the way to the top. I've been putting about two liters in it. I was curious about how long it would take to heat up cold water with this unit so I ran a little test. I started out with cold tap water that showed 18 degrees. It took an hour and 42 minutes to reach adc which is 176 Fahrenheit. So it takes forever to warm up cold water and that was with the lid closed. After I had it up to 80 degrees, I just pulled the lid off and left it for a while to see how hot it would keep things. It dropped pretty quickly but it seemed to stabilize around 60. So even with the lid off, this was able to maintain. So it's slow but it will get the job done eventually if you don't have access to warm water.

The sound this makes is one of the most annoying sounds in the world. It's not like super loud. It's just really annoying. It's the sort of crap you hear at the dentist. Whenever I've got brass that I've got lubed, maybe I just resized it and trimmed it, and I just really want to remove the lube I'll put it in this with hot water and a little bit of soap for just a couple minutes and all the lube is gone. So that is definitely much easier than pulling out the whole wet tumbler and going through a full wet tumbling cycle. Now one thing I'll warn you is apparently I just got a good one. If you go over to amazon and look at the reviews they're pretty bad like a lot of people report getting units that are dead on arrival or it only lasts for one or two uses. But so far it seems like I got lucky. That heater was going full blast for three hours. So feeling pretty good about that and the ultrasonic has been running just fine as well so I guess I got lucky. The good news is this particular seller, this Vevor brand, a lot of people mentioned that it was really easy to get a refund or get an exchange. So nobody wants to deal with that but it's good to know the service is available if you need it."

Which Cleaning Solutions Should I Not Add to the Water?
Solutions that have low flash points should not be added. The cavitation process works by releasing energy, which is converted to heat and then to kinetic energy. As a result, high-temperature gradients are generated in the solutions. Using flammables, bleach, acids, or other such agents produces even higher temperature gradients that can be extremely risky. Here is a list of effective cleaning solutions:

  • Alkaline Solutions: With a pH of 10 or higher, they are great for cleaning stainless steel, metals, zinc, tin, copper, and cast iron. Alkaline solutions also work well when cleaning ceramics, glass, and plastic materials.
  • Acidic solutions: they have a pH of 5 or lower hence, more aggressive than alkaline solutions. As such, acidic solutions are used for cleaning specific materials, e.g., removing oxides from metals as long as the solution contains inhibitors that protect the base material.
  • De-ionized water: it is great for cleaning all kinds of material-metals, plastics, rubber, glass, and fabrics.
  • High Caustic solutions: these are special alkaline solutions used for removing waxes, heavy grease, and oils from steel, cast iron, and stainless steel.

How Does degassing Aid the Cavitation Process? Degassing occurs when the gases in the solution are removed, creating a vacuum. Cavitation is only possible when the gases are removed to enable the formation of bubbles in the vacuum. The bubbles collapse once the sound waves hit them to release energy that enhances the breaking down of dirt particles from the item.Read more...
