Less than a year after opening a new millennial-geared prototype near Interstate 275, GrillSmith has closed its South Tampa restaurant —again.
It's not clear exactly when the restaurant closed. GrillSmith still owns the 6,294-square-foot building on 1.1 acres at 612 N. Dale Mabry Hwy., according to Hillsborough County property records.
That building was the previous Grille One Sixteen space; GrillSmith bought it in 2017 for $2.9 million. GrillSmith moved there after shuttering its previous South Tampa location, in a strip center at North Dale Mabry Highway and West Watrous Avenue.
Mark Johnston, president and CEO of GrillSmith, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday.
GrillSmith debuted the new prototype in early May 2018, with an "urban tavern feel." Johnston said the restaurant was "tailored to a more millennial attitude," meaning a bar experience that's front and center, with a "craft comfort" menu of appetizers that was to be changed up every three months or so.
GrillSmith was also planning to open new locations in St. Petersburg and Sarasota with the same look and feel as the South Tampa prototype.
