Manasquan Inlet to Little Egg Inlet NJ out 20 NM Marine Forecast (2024)

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
945am EDT Monday September 2 2024

Synopsis
A cold front will continue moving across the area from north to south early this morning. High pressure will then build eastward across the area through midweek before shifting off to the north and east late week. Low pressure then looks to move northward up the coast by Friday into Saturday.

Near Term - Through Tonight
The autumnal weather continues for our Labor Day. No changes from previous discussion.

Behind the front, much drier air works in with cooler temperatures. The only thing to note for today will be the breezy north- northwest winds. Some gusts up to 30 MPH are possible in the wake of the front under partly to mostly sunny skies.

For tonight, high pressure begins to work in from the upper Midwest. Being on eastern periphery of the high as it moves in, a somewhat tight gradient will still be in place overnight, keeping winds elevated. Skies will be clear however, and temperatures will drop into the upper 40s/low 50s, with all climate sites seeing lows around 10 degrees below normal for early September.

Short Term - Tuesday Through Wednesday Night
High pressure settles across the northeast and Mid Atlantic states Tuesday through Tuesday night, bringing relatively cooler conditions with low humidity. Tuesday and Tuesday night will be less windy than Monday and continue to be dry as the high will be over the region. Temperatures will be a bit below average for this time of year with the low humidity as well. Expect highs Tuesday mostly in the 70s with lows Tuesday night ranging from the upper 40s in the cooler spots over much of eastern PA and interior NJ to the mid 50s near the coast, Delaware Bay, and the urban corridor.

High pressure begins to shift offshore Wednesday allowing for some moderation in the airmass compared to Tuesday. Expect highs mainly in the 75 to 80 degree range under continuing mainly sunny skies. Wednesday night stays fair and dry with somewhat warmer overnight lows compared to Tuesday night.

Long Term - Thursday Through Sunday
The center of high pressure continues to shift offshore to the north and east into Thursday, but the southwest extent of its ridge will still be nosing its way into our area, keeping the weather dry. Temperatures Thursday will be around average for this time of year with it also turning a bit more humid due to easterly flow off the ocean.

The weather pattern looks to turn more unsettled for the very end of the week into next weekend. There will be both a cold front approaching from the west and a developing low that looks to move northward up the coast. Expect clouds increasing through Friday with increasing chances for some showers by late day. The best chances for rain though look to be Friday night into Saturday and there is even the potential the rain could be heavy. Forecast models seem to be trending towards this wetter solution to start next weekend but there are still some differences between the different models as well as ensemble members. For this reason, continue to keep forecast close to the NBM which brings in POPs in the high "chance" to low "likely" range (50 to 60 percent) across the area for Friday night / Saturday. Clearing and drying looks to occur through next Sunday as the system moves off to the north and northeast.

Marine
For today, sub-SCA (Small Craft Advisory) conditions are expected with north/northeast winds around 10-20 kt and seas 2 to 3 feet.

A Small Craft Advisory was issued for tonight for all Atlantic coastal zones as winds and seas will increase. Gusts around 25 kt out of the north/northeast and seas 3 to 5 feet are expected. The Small Craft Advisory goes in effect until 12z Tuesday, though may need to be extended if seas are slow to lessen.

Winds tonight on the Delaware Bay will be around 15-20 kt with some gusts in the low 20s. A Small Craft Advisory may need to be issued if winds trend any higher however.

Outlook... Tuesday through Wednesday...Conditions should be below Small Craft Advisory levels.

Thursday - Friday...Small Craft Advisory levels possible as winds and especially seas start to increase ahead of the next system.

Rip currents... Today...Winds go more north/northwesterly, with flow slightly offshore. This, combined with 1 to 2 foot breaking waves and an 8 second period will result in a LOW risk for the development of rip currents.

Tuesday...Winds turn more northeasterly around 15-20 MPH. Breaking waves will increase to around 2 to 4 feet. Multiple swell groups are expected to be present tomorrow as well, with wave periods from ranging from 8 to 12 seconds. As a result, a MODERATE risk for rip currents is in place at all shore points.
