Korean canned tuna (2024)

Canned tuna is an everyday ingredient in Korean cuisine, so most Korean grocery stores will have at least one shelf devoted to yellow cans of Korean oil-packed tuna.

Korean canned tuna is more chunky, meaty, and flavorful than other kinds. It’s usually sold in yellow pull-top cans and comes in a variety of flavors. Some of the flavors are very Korean, like kimchi stew–flavored tuna, or tuna flavored with jjajang sauce (black bean paste), or “DHA tuna” (an omega-3 fatty acid that supposedly aids in brain function).

Boxed sets of tuna are common gifts to family, friends, and coworkers at Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving). At this time of year, people often exchange nicely packaged food gifts, such as cases of pears or persimmons, yellow corvina, abalone, beef, and even Spam and tuna combo boxes.
