Most of us prefer sitting down while drinking water. We do not question why, we just do. This could be attributed to the several claims that suggest drinking water while standing up hampers our health in some way or the other. But how true are the claims? In an interaction with the OnlyMyHealth team, Dr Brunda, Consultant-Internal Medicine, Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, shares some answers.

What Do The Claims Suggest

According to Dr Brunda, there are reports that say drinking water while standing may cause toxin accumulation in the joints and one may develop arthritis. Other claims suggest that it may lead to various digestive issues, such as heartburn and indigestion. Moreover, some claims even suggest that it can damage kidneys, the liver and puts pressure on the uterus. This is because it is assumed that water travels faster when we’re standing, it collects in the joints and remains unfiltered in the kidneys. A google search may also restate these claims.

What An Expert Has To Say

As opposed to all the claims, Dr Brunda says, “All these claims are not backed by any substantial data or scientific research.”

Drinking water in any position, whether standing, sitting, or lying down, is generally considered beneficial for staying hydrated and supporting overall health. The most crucial factor is to ensure adequate hydration throughout the day.

The US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recommends daily fluid intake of about 15.5 cups (3.7 litres) of fluids a day for men and about 11.5 cups (2.7 litres) of fluids a day for women. This includes fluids from water, beverages, and foods.

One way to check your hydration is to monitor the colour of your urine, according to research published in the Journal Nutrients. Pale yellow or straw-coloured urine generally indicates adequate hydration, while darker yellow or amber-coloured urine might signal that you need to drink more water.

Remember, thirst is also a natural indicator of your body's water needs, so listen to your body and drink water when you feel thirsty.
