What information do wind barbs provide? ›

The wind barb indicates the wind direction and wind speed. Wind barbs point in the direction "from" which the wind is blowing. In the case of the diagram below, the orientation of the wind barb indicates winds from the Northeast. The term easterly means that the winds are from the east.

At 50 knots, the barbs changes to a pennant. For wind speeds higher than 50 knots, long and short barbs are used again in combination with the pennant(s).

How do we determine the wind direction? ›

Meteorologists study the strength and the direction of wind. One tool they use for measuring wind direction is a wind vane. It spins and points in the direction from which the wind is blowing.

Wind direction (dd) and speed (ff) are plotted at the center of the station model plot. A wind barb (dd) extends from the direc- tion the wind is blowing to the circle. In the example below the wind is from the northwest and speed “ff” is represented by flags on the wind barb.
