Experts on whether rocking your hips for a minute help release ‘stored trauma in the body’ (2024)

Wellness has become such an important part of our lives that we wish to try (or at least verify the effectiveness of) even the smallest thing that can (probably) help make a difference. As such, when actor Chunky Panday’ssister-in-law and fitness trainer Deanne Panday took to Instagram to share that the simple act of rocking your hips for a minute helps release ‘stored trauma in the body’, we just had to know more!

“Did you know that rocking your hips for a minute per day releases the stored trauma in the body? The rhythm of the rocking motion also activates your parasympathetic nervous system, naturally bringing you to a state of peace and ease,” Panday informed while demonstrating the exercise that showed her us lying facedown and rocking her hips.

Take a look.

“Do this every time you feel stressed or post a workout. It brings you to a state of ease and peace,” she captioned her post.

Fitness professional Chitrakshi Sharma, too, suggested that the “hips are an important storage vessel of emotional stress because of the psoas’ link to the adrenal glands and the location of the sacral chakra which processes emotions like fear, sadness, frustration, loss, and worry”.

“As we clench and tense up when we are faced with these emotions, we lock and store them into our hips. So it is important for us to practice hip openers in order to release the trauma,” said Sharma.

She also added that one won’t be able to experience the release of trauma in one go, “it’s gonna take a while”.

Does practising hip rocking work?

Dr Shrey Srivastav, MD (Internal Medicine), Sharda Hospital, Noida said that the exercise strengthens the back, hip, and abdomen muscles. “It improves balance and blood circulation and reduces muscle pain, and anxiety. Neuroscience indicates that the hips are a potential storage vessel for emotions,” said Dr Srivastav.

According to Dr Srivastav, rocking releases endorphins in the brain, which can improve mood and reduce stress, anxiety, and tension and the sensory stimulation associated with a swinging motion exerts a “synchronising action in the brain that reinforces endogenous sleep rhythms”.

However, psychologist Kamna Chhibber said there are no studies suggesting that this technique helps.
