I’ve been doing hip flexor stretch for years because of that pain in the front of my hip joint. The pain never went away. Thanks Dr. Daphne “Pole” Ryan, PT, DPT, MS Aviation Specialist Physiotherapist for continuing to shake things up and also for recognizing in this latest post how physically punishing aviation maintenance can be. All the sailors on the carrier flight deck: squadron maintainers, ALRE, crash & salvage, and aircraft handlers/directors work super long hours in punishing conditions. Thank you for recognizing their service and their needs. To my network, please share so our maintainers and flight deck crews see this.

The Block 89 version of the EA-6B I was crewed in for the invasion of Iraq in 2003 didn't have GPS integrated into its crude and drifty inertial navigation system, no radar warning receiver, no air-to-air radar, no Link-16. It's a wonder we always found our targets and our tankers, and didn't get shot down (by Iraqi air defenses, or by our own Patriot batteries which at that time were more lethal to us than Saddam's forces). Much respect to our Navigator forebears, who had it much harder and flew in much more dangerous skies. Suggested reading: "No Moon Tonight" by Australian Navigator flying RAAF missions over Germany during WWII. Incredibly powerful first hand account of the night side of the air war.

I love this team and what they represent: hope and inspiration. I know there are disabled drivers here in the USA that deserve a chance like this, and I hope to see that idea come to reality in American races like the Daytona 24H, the 12H of Sebring, GT4 America and IMSA series, you name it: sky's the limit.

Back pain sufferers, My last two Physical Therapy sessions for lower back and sciatic pain consisted ENTIRELY of nerve glide, piriformis, hamstring, calf, and hip flexor stretches. Which is why I find Dr. Ryan’s work so earth shattering. “When you stretch, you pull nerves. They do not like it.”In my limited experience, this is a true statement. I’m going to continue the strength training that’s been very effective for me, and I’ve suspended the stretching program.I hope the Naval Aviation Enterprise figures this out and formalizes the right path forward for these all to common flying injuries. If you fly or manage air operations, definitely follow OPSGROUP. No one else shares info like this! So far they’ve gathered, analyzed, and shared so much about hazards in the Middle East with GPS spoofing. Great stuff!

I wouldn’t be so adamant about sharing these posts if they weren’t so groundbreaking for me. The most recent treatment I got from the VA for my lower back consisted entirely of stretching. Whereas the first time I did intensive PT for my back in 2018 (while AD) , the focus was entirely on core strength. The strength approach is what saved me back then. This recent work suggests that the stretching approach I was recently directed to may be completely wrong for me. Doc, you’ve got my attention!

Good news not only for DoD personnel, but also for the U.S. diplomatic mission in Iraq:https://lnkd.in/eBZAFt5x
