Big Layover in Detroit airport - any good restaurants nearby?
We are flying through Detroit and have a 3 hour layover. With Spring break, I guess you can expect it!
To make the best of it, we will be arriving around the dinner hour, and thought we could taxi to a nearby restaurant for a good dinner. Any suggestions for a good restaurant near the Detroit airport? We are traveling as a family of 4, so we want something close so we don't spend alot on cab fare.

3 Hours is NOT a long layover these days. I wouldn't leave the airport, too much hassle.

I agree, don't leave the terminal. The good restaurants nearest Detroit are in Ann Arbor.

Detroit has to be one of the worst big airports if (IF) you have a plane change. You may walk and walk and walk to your plane. Seriously, for a fit person (no kids; no walking problem) it can take 30 minutes to get from one end to another. If you left, returned and went thru security, you may stil have a LONG ( I MEAN LONG ) walk to your plane.

I just read a great article on the new "Asian-inspired Westin Detroit" Metropolitan Airport hotel that recently opened at the McNamara terminal. Kudos for restaurant and 8-story atrium with 5,000 square foot "reflecting pool". McNamara airport is soooo much more pleasant than the rest of Detroit Metro Airport... hope this helps!

You don't have time to go to Ann Arbor.Would cost $$$. There is a sports bar,families go there, all the flight people go. The sandwiches are HUGE and good. the trouble is I can't remember the name.Something and Rye. Its down the road from airport.

I agree that 3 hours really isn't that long anymore by the time you go out and have to come back in through security again. The new terminal at Detroit is really nice and they have an indoor train to get you from gate to gate. I would find one of the restaurants on the website given by Elberko and just enjoy a relaxing lunch/dinner instead of looking at your watch the whole time.

I live in good old Michigan, and I can tell you that 3 hours isn't enough. Detroit/Wayne is so congested, especially during rush hour traffic. And even if it isn't during rush hour traffic, it is crazy around the airport.
Sometimes there is a big traffic back up. You don't want to take the chance of missing your flight. There are some good restaurants and bars.
Eat a little and drink some drinks. Be merry...knowing that you will be in hopefully a tropical destination soon!

In response to xx11's comments about the long walks, while the new main terminal is indeed very long, it does have an indoor shuttle on the upper level, so don't worry. I actually prefer to walk if I have time, in order to stretch my legs between flights, but if I'm in a hurry I'll hop the shuttle.

The last time I changed planes in the new Detroit terminal, that shuttle (monorail or whatever it is) broke down and we were stuck in it for about 15 minutes. I recomend walking if you are tight on time.
Unless you are extremely lucky on the gate locations, you will have a significant walk anyway. IIRC there are only 3 places the people mover stops.
