Hi, I'm new to these forums and was wondering whether anyone could recommend a good roleplay-oriented MMO. (By "roleplay oriented" I mean one in which people generally stay in character while playing). Barring that, I'd also be interested in a good RP server in a mainstream MMO.
If this has been discussed before in another thread, please let me know. (My searches turned up nothing).

well, first off, Welcome the the Escapist and thanks for at least trying to use the search bar. Anyway, on-topic: I don't know about many rp sites butI do know of a few good MMO's that are rpgs.
I'm personally a big fan of Mabinogi: http://mabinogi.nexon.net
I hope that that may help a little bit

Thanks for the suggestion; I hadn't heard of Mabinogi before. I'll give it a try.

Forget the online. Try getting some buddies together for some Dungeons&Dragons. Or perhaps a White Wolf game like Exalted.

Not really an MMO, but if you want some good online RP, Neverwinter Nights works well. Just go to the RP section, and the populated places tend tot ake it seriously enough. Smaller ones are better though, for me anyways. I felt too small in places liek Arabel. (Large RP server there)

If you like constantly changing server since the f***ing noob crowds stalk ýou..
But to be honest, I actualy recommend WoW private servers. Some of them have great RP, but the elements of PvE and PvP are sadly often frowned upon on those servers.

Sorry, I meant to say private servers.

The sad, sad, sad, realistic answer to that is none.
Or at least almost non-existing. Have you seen how, accurately, MMORPGs have been called more and more often MMOs? There is an answer right there. No one, even in RPG servers, role-plays.
Even some companies that were developing newer MMOs have said this in no uncertain terms, (paraphrasing) that "demand for RPG-only servers is way lower than PvP".
(Sorry I can't provide a link to the last statement I made, but sadly I can't find the website I read it at). :-(
But now that I gently dab tears from my eyes, and with head refreshed anew after a tearful sigh, I remember The Saga of Ryzom [http://www.ryzom.com/en/] (once long ago ran by Nevrax). That one is worth your checking, and they have a 14-day free trial. But it may the that the population is on the low side of the spectrum.

There used to be a bunch of great UO RPG freeshards.
Well, but I haven't played in about a decade, so...

I'm an RP'er myself and honestly. There aren't any really good mmo's for RP. WoW is sadly the one that atleast the devs and GM's dont piss allover you. And when I last play wich was forever ago, actually banned or dealt out reprimands to dickhe*ds who harassed RPers on RP servers.
Nah, they are pretty bad now. I finally quit WoW recently and it's RP servers aren't any different now than the other kinds.

Found this thread searching on MMOs after Yahtzee confused me regarding Guild Wars 2. What is really good? Are MMOs still worth playing? What do you play? I tried DC online for free. Huge download, major let down. I'd rather play solitaire.
DCUO is very... console-y (I don't think that's a word but what the hell...) I didn't like it.
MMOs are an acquired taste. I enjoy LOTRO, Fallen Earth and Star Trek Online, and dip in and out of others occassionally. With so many being F2P now they're easy to try. If, like many Escapists, you like Bioware, then try The Old Republic - it has its faults, but it sticks very close to the typical Bioware RPG style so it's an accessible intro to the genre.
As for the original topic, LOTRO's main RP server, Landroval, has quite a good reputation for quality RPers - though with the usual array of power gamers, drama queens and... worse.

Yeah, I've only heard good things about LotRO's RP server myself. Of course, I haven't delved too deeply, I just know that it's easy to customize your characters appearance and there are a lot of emotes at your disposal.
