  • 1 tablespoons olive oil, or enough to coat well.
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. 375 F oven
  2. Place scrubbed, whole unpeeled beets in a dutch oven. If any are overly large, cut in half so all are roughly the same diameter. For faster cooking, feel free to halve all.

20+ Easy Delicious Beet Recipes (2024)

FAQs

What is the most delicious way to eat beets? ›

Beets are delicious roasted, grilled, microwaved, steamed, boiled or air-fried. The key is to experiment with various cooking techniques to find one that gives you the desired flavor.

How to make good tasting beets? ›

Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Cook and stir shredded beets in hot butter until slightly softened, about 5 minutes. Pour water over the beets, cover skillet with a lid, and simmer beets until completely softened, about 10 minutes. Stir balsamic vinegar with the beets; season with salt and pepper.

What flavors go well with beets? ›

Also ingredients like dark chocolate, nuts, coffee or roasted onions have earthy flavors and pair well with beetroot. This could be explained by the presence of 'pyrazines', which are aromatic structures formed during the process of roasting ingredients. These pyrazines also contain an earthy smell.

Why not peel beets before roasting? ›

No need to peel before or after baking. The skin, which is perfectly edible, just seems to disappear during the baking process. The trick to pan-roasted beets is to drop the temperature a bit. I always roast potatoes, Brussels sprouts, carrots, and pretty much all the other veggies at 425 degrees Fahrenheit.

What brings out the flavor of beets? ›

Beets and Citrus

The acid in citrus brings out and balances the sweet notes of peak season beets. Try this citrus and beet salad for yourself and let us know how it tastes. If salads aren't your thing, try a beet and citrus juice drink.

Why do I feel better after eating beets? ›

Beets are high in nitrates which research suggests improve cardiovascular health in several ways. Some studies show beetroot juice supplementation may lower blood pressure and increase blood flow. It increases oxygen uptake, lengthening the time it takes to become fatigued, which allows people to stay active longer.

Is it better to peel beets before cooking? ›

Forget what you thought you knew about food prep: You don't HAVE to peel your vegetables (well, most of them, anyway).

Is it better to boil or roast beets? ›

If I'm planning to make a salad, or adding the beets to a buddha bowl, I like to roast them for extra flavor. When planning to puree the beets into a soup, dip or hummus, I like to steam or boil the beets. If you have a steamer basket, I recommend steaming over boiling the beets.

How do you make beets more palatable? ›

My favorite way to cook beets is to roast them, which gives a sweeter, richer, and deeper flavor than boiling does. Another advantage is that they don't bleed as much, especially if they're roasted whole. Incidentally, to get beet stains off your hands, wet them, rub them with coarse salt, then wash with soap.

What is the best companion for beets? ›

Some of the best companion plants for beets are members of the cabbage family. Plant beets near cruciferous vegetables like kohlrabi, kale, cauliflower, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts to help enrich the soil and improve the quality and growth of your Brassicas. 5. Radishes.

What to eat with beets for dinner? ›

Some foods that mix well with beets include goat cheese, arugula, walnuts, lemon juice, and balsamic vinegar. Other complementary ingredients include orange, dill, horseradish, and sour cream. Beets also pair well with meats such as chicken, fish, and pork.

Why are my roasted beets bitter? ›

Roasted anything that turns out bitter is almost always the symptom of overcooking. Sometimes it also means that your ingredients were spoiled or "off" in the first place. As for saving them - there's not much you can do in either case, other than trying to mask it with some other flavours.

Can dogs eat beets? ›

Yes! Beets are safe for your dog to eat in moderation and are a healthy source of vitamin C, fiber, folate, manganese, and potassium. These vitamins and minerals are good for your dog's digestion and immune system as well as a healthy skin and coat. While it's rare, some dogs can be allergic.

Can you eat beets raw? ›

You can even enjoy them raw, either sliced thinly or grated. Choose beets that feel heavy for their size with fresh, unwilted green leafy tops still attached, if possible. Because dietary nitrates are water-soluble, it's best to avoid boiling beets if you'd like to maximize their nitrate content.

How do you eat beets if you don't like them? ›

One of my first and favorite discoveries was to put beets in Taco Soup. I usually put in shoestring canned beets, or you could slice up fresh ones. You won't even notice them in the soup. They will blend in with the tomatoes and give your soup a beautiful rich red color and you will get all of the vitamins!

Are beets better steamed or roasted? ›

Beets take about the same time to steam as they do to roast, and it's a good option if you don't want to heat up your kitchen with the oven. But I find that roasted beets have a richer flavor.

Is it better to eat beets raw or cooked? ›

Raw beets contain more vitamins, minerals and antioxidants than cooked beets (yes, you can eat beets raw!). Like many vegetables, the longer you cook beets—especially in water—the more the colorful phytonutrients leach out of the food and into the water.
